Welcome to the Year 1 Phonics Check – Brookfields Primary School

What is the Phonics Check?
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short, simple test that helps us see how well children are learning to read using phonics. It’s a way to spot any children who might need a little extra support, so we can help them build confidence and skills.

How it Works
The check usually takes place in June and only takes a few minutes. During the check, your child will read a list of 40 words aloud to their teacher. Some words are real, and some are “alien” (silly made-up words!) to see how well your child can use phonics to sound out words.

Examples of Words Your Child Might Read

Real words:

  • cat

  • jump

  • frog

  • ship

Alien words:

  • vob

  • neep

  • zint

  • tork

These “alien” words are just nonsense words that let your child show they can sound out words, even if they’ve never seen them before.

How You Can Help at Home
There are lots of small, fun ways to support your child’s reading at home:

  • Spend 10–15 minutes each day reading together.

  • Encourage your child to sound out words slowly (for example, c-a-t = cat).

  • Play games with letters, rhymes, or sounds.

  • Talk about new words you come across in stories or books.

Tips for Making Reading Fun

  • Turn reading into a game or special storytime – make it enjoyable!

  • Praise your child’s efforts, even if they make mistakes – confidence is key.

  • Use online resources like PhonicsPlay for extra practice.
