Reading Expectations
We ask that all pupils read at home for at least 10–15 minutes each day. Regular reading is one of the most valuable ways you can support your child’s learning.
Please record each reading session in your child’s reading record. There is space for parents and carers to sign or initial to show when reading has taken place.
Consistent daily reading makes a significant difference to children’s progress, fluency and confidence. Thank you for making this part of your routine at home.

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
To help prepare for the MTC, Year 4 pupils should practise their times tables regularly using Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS).
We recommend at least 15 minutes of practice each day. Short, frequent sessions are the most effective way to build speed, accuracy and confidence.
Please speak to Mr Miles or Miss Murray if you need support with helping your child to log in.

If you have any further questions linked with homework, or how to support your child at home, please speak to Miss Murray or Mr Miles.
PE Days
Our PE lessons take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Please ensure your child comes to school with their full PE kit, including appropriate footwear for indoor and outdoor activities. Having the correct kit in school helps your child to participate fully, safely and comfortably in all lessons.
Thank you for your support in helping us promote a healthy and active lifestyle for all pupils.
Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)
The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment for all Year 4 pupils in England. It is designed to ensure children know their multiplication tables fluently and can recall them quickly and accurately.
What is the MTC?
The MTC is completed online in school during June.
- It includes 25 multiplication questions.
- Children have 6 seconds to answer each question.
- The check focuses on times tables up to 12 × 12.
- Pupils complete it individually using a computer or tablet.
The purpose of the check is not to create pressure, but to ensure children have a secure foundation in multiplication, which is essential for later maths learning.
Why are times tables so important?
Secure knowledge of times tables supports many areas of maths, including:
- Division
- Fractions
- Long multiplication and division
- Problem solving
- Mathematical reasoning
When children can recall multiplication facts quickly and accurately, they are able to focus on understanding more complex mathematical concepts.
How can you support at home?
You can make a big difference by encouraging regular practice at home.
- Use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) for daily practice.
- Aim for at least 15 minutes of short, focused practice each day.
- Practise in small bursts rather than long sessions.
- Ask quick-fire questions during everyday routines (for example, in the car or at dinner time).
Regular, consistent practice helps children build speed, accuracy and confidence.
Reassurance for Parents
We prepare children carefully in school and build their confidence throughout the year. The check is completed in a calm and supportive environment, and we focus on celebrating effort and progress.
If you have any questions about the MTC or would like advice on supporting your child at home, please contact the class teacher, Mr Miles or Miss Murray.
Please see below the Parent Leaflet with additional information linked with the MTC.
